Are homegrown sprouts safe?

Yes! Homegrown sprouts are very safe. Some people are worried about sprouting safety as there have been outbreaks associated with sprouts from grocery stores. Store-bought sprouts that have been produced on a large-scale basis in a factory-like setting are difficult to keep free from illness-causing pathogens. That's why we treat our Sproutclub seeds with a special organic hypochlorite solution which makes them 99.99% free from ANY pathogens. This means sprouting at home is much safer. Not to mention, with supermarket sprouts costing up to a dollar an ounce, our product is also much more affordable than the store-bought ones.

Why are my sprouts growing so slow?

There are many variables that can slow sprout germination and growth, from temperature to light. For ideal growing conditions, ensure your sprouts are growing in a dark place, that the temperature isn’t too cold, and that they’re watered daily. The ideal temperature for high quality sprouts is between 20-26˚C; however, 26-30˚C will speed up the process of sprout growth.

How can I tell my sprouts have gone bad?

If your sprouts look slimy and begin to smell bad/rancid, it’s probably best to toss them and start another cycle of greens.

How long do sprouts stay good?

Sprouts should stay good for 1.5 to 2 weeks in the fridge. You'll have an indication that your sprouts have gone bad if they have begun to shrivel and dry up, or if they are slimy and have a slightly rancid smell.

Help, my sprouts are covered in white, fuzzy mold!

Not to worry! This is most likely not mold. While sprouts are growing, they develop fuzzy root hairs, which can be easily confused with white mold. However, this is not likely the case. If your sprouts are moldy, the mold will often be in uneven clusters, speckled with black, have a slimy base and off smell, and/or have a cobweb-like appearance. One easy way to check this is to water your sprouts—if the hairs disappear, that means they were just thirsty roots.

If your sprouts are indeed moldy, this is likely because they are too wet or, less often, have too little air flow. Make sure your jars are properly drained (we leave ours upside down on the trays after watering) and in a place where the air isn't too stagnant.

What if some of my sprouts or microgreens are moldy? Do I have to throw everything away?

Sometimes, due to unideal growing conditions, your sprouts or microgreens may develop patches of mold. If the patch is small and has not spread, you likely do not have to throw away the whole jar. We recommend cutting away the moldy areas and thoroughly washing the rest, which should be safe to eat. If the mold is more widespread, it is unfortunately time to toss your sprouts and start a new jar.
