Best Way to Grow Sprouts

Growing sprouts in a jar is an easy and rewarding process. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Materials Needed: Sprouting seeds (such as alfalfa, clover, mung beans, lentils, broccoli, or radish) A clean glass jar A sprout lid with holes for draining Water A darker space for the first two days

Step-by-Step Instructions: Prepare the Seeds:

Measure out 1-2 tablespoons of sprouting seeds. The amount will vary depending on the type of seed and the size of your jar.

Soak the Seeds:

Place the seeds in the glass jar. Cover the seeds with enough water to soak all the seeds. Cover the jar with the lid. Let the seeds soak for 8-12 hours (overnight is convenient).

Drain and Rinse:

After soaking, drain the water through the lid. Rinse the seeds by adding fresh water to the jar, swirling it around, and draining again. We recommend rotating the jar as you pour out the water so that the seed sticks to the sides of the jar and don't conglomerate on the bottom. Make sure to drain all the water out to prevent mold growth.

Begin the Sprouting Process:

Place the jar at an angle (our jar stands are helpful for this) to allow any remaining water to drain and air to circulate. Keep the jar in a darker place for the first couple days. We often have them sit on our counter, in our sink, or when there is less counter space, in a cupboard.

Rinse and Drain Once Daily:

Rinse the seeds with fresh water once a day. Drain thoroughly after each rinse and return the jar to its angled position.

Monitor Growth:

Within a few days, you will see sprouts begin to form. The exact time will depend on the type of seeds used. Continue rinsing and draining until the sprouts are the desired length. This usually takes 3-7 days. After the first two days, consider putting sprouts into more sunlight to increase clorophyl.

Final Rinse and Dry:

Once the sprouts have reached the desired length, give them a final rinse. Let them drain and dry thoroughly to remove excess moisture, which can cause spoilage.

Harvest and Store:

Place airtight lid (e.g. a jar lid) on the jar and store them in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks.

Tips for Success: Cleanliness: Ensure that all equipment is clean to prevent contamination. Ventilation: Proper drainage and airflow are crucial to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Light: Avoid direct sunlight for the first few days; sprouts grow best in a dark environment. Expose them to light once bigger if you want greener sprouts. Temperature: Keep the jar in a coolish place. Ideal temperatures are between 18-24°C (65-75°F).

Enjoy your fresh, homegrown sprouts!
